Chicken Diseases and their causes

Infectious diseases can occur in poultry farming for all type of pets and breeds. When a chicken looks sick it will behave strange. A healthy chicken will have bright normal eyes and scavenges for food. whereas, an unhealthy sick chicken will look dull and have dull eyes and are less active with ruffled feathers. And you may notice abnormal breathing i.e.,coughing, abnormal digestion and the chicken are laying fewer or abnormal eggs.

Infectious diseases are generally caused by germs. These germs act as pathogens which means they cause disease.

Some of the disease caused by pathogens are listed below,
1. Viruses causing e.g. Newcastle Disease, bird flu or avian influenza, fowl pox and Gumboro disease.
2. Bacteria causing e.g. fowl cholera, typhoid and pullorum disease.
3. Fungi causing e.g. Aspergillosis or brooder pneumonia.
Some of the above listed diseases can cause high death rates.

Of all the microbes, only a few parasites are visible to the naked eye. All other germs can only be seen with special microscopes. Fungi or moulds can produce toxic substances called mycotoxins. If birds eat feed with mycotoxins, their resistance may be lowered and their health is severly attacked. Feed should therefore be stored properly to avoid fungal growth. Parasites also cause disease or result in retardation of growth: internally like roundworms, tapeworms and coccidiosis or externally like fleas, ticks, lice.

The right diagnosis should be carried out by a good veterinarian and suitable remedies should be taken to save the lives of the chickens from pathogens or else it will end up in high mortality rate of the chickens.

A colour atlas of poultry diseases 2011

This is the first ever such atlas to be produced for Indian farmers and poultry professionals. Its objective is to provide a handy tool to farmers for on-the-spot diagnosis of diseases, under field conditions. Although a large number of laboratory tests, some sophisticated like ELISA and PCR, have been developed for the diagnosis of poultry diseases, they are either not available or are beyond the reach of reach of most farmers.

Moreover, by the time birds reach laboratory, they are mostly decomposed and unfit for postmortem examination and disease diagnosis. The delay in diagnosis allows the disease to inflict mortality and ruin farmer’s economy. The key to disease control then is on-the-spot diagnosis. It is with this objective that the colour atlas has been produced-to make readily available to poultry farmers a handy tool for immediate and accurate disease diagnosis under field conditions.

A large number of poultry diseases, including the more deadly like Ranikhet and Gumboro, leave their footprints in the dead bird. From these characteristic postmortem findings, it is possible to arrive at a correct diagnosis. The atlas provides 150 coloured photographs and covers a wide spectrum of poultry diseases. For important diseases, several photographs are given so that at no stage their diagnosis is missed.

Also, wherever considered appropriate, pictures of live birds showing symptoms of specific diseases are given. In addition, each disease is accompanied by a brief description that highlights its salient features and also records. In addition, each disease is accompanied by a brief description that highlights its salient features and also records author's field observations.

The chicken coop designed by RAAD is a luxury residence for chickens

Although they had set up shop at one end of the BKLYN Designs booth, RAAD studio is actually based in Lower Manhattan. Nevertheless, their piece had a distinctly Brooklyn-DIY quality to it: among the myriad chairs, desks, lamps and other (international) contemporary furniture at the ICFF this year, RAAD's "the chicken coop " came completely out of left field.

It's more or less what its pithy title suggests: a ritzy take on a chicken coop (and arguably the biggest leap forward in coop design and technology ever), which makes for "a perfect oddball modernist addition to a city terrace or roof garden." (For the record, it is perfectly legal to raise chickens in New York City.)

The chicken coop presents a unique luxury option for urban chickens. Floor to ceiling windows allow for unparalleled views. Amenities are fully integrated. Open, loft-like spaces liberate the lifestyles of modern chickens.

An adjustable ventilation system creates optimum comfort for chickens in any weather or climate. The four-nest chicken lost of 63 sq.ft. allows for spacious, comfortable living. Exclusive and social spaces combine, allowing chickens to interact with neighbors and retreat to luxurious private nests.

Poultry gallery - chicken breeds

One of the most attractive aspects of poultry keeping as a hobby is the sheer diversity of breeds available; enthusiasts have an almost limitless choice of shapes, sizes and colours to pick from.

There are many important breed-related factors to be considered when choosing birds. It is vital that birds are matched to the facilities available, and that breed temperament is suited to the environment in which they are kept.

Nicaragua poultry industry rejects reducing import tariffs

Nicaragua's poultry sector has rejected the idea of reducing poultry prices through the elimination of import tariffs, an idea suggested by the U.S. government in late April, according to Nicaragua Minister of Commerce Orlando Solórzano.

Alfonso Valerio, president of the Association of Small and Medium Poultry Producers of Nicaragua, said it is necessary to find a way to increase poultry in the international market without affecting Nicaraguan producers. He has requested a negotiation between the government and the poultry industry leaders to find a way to avoid the importation of poultry products.

The massive importation of chicken is not going to solve the problem, because production costs are increased for the poultry industry," said Valerio, referring to the rising international prices of raw materials for animal feed.
Nicaragua's poultry industry contributes 3% to the country’s GDP.

To export or to import chicken in Asia 2011

ORISSA, INDIA
The Government has decided to promote coloured birds, targeting increased egg production as well as employment generation in the poultry sector.

The Animal Resources Development (ARD) Department has decided to develop hatcheries, exclusively for the coloured birds, on public private partnership (PPP) mode, reports IBN Live. Of the 48 new hatcheries being established in the districts, 36 would be handed over to entrepreneurs for which tenders would be floated soon.

This was decided in the first State-level review meeting of the Animal Husbandry sector presided over by newly appointed Fisheries and ARD Minister, Ramesh Chandra Majhi, on Tuesday (24 May). The Government has completed construction of the hatcheries and incubators are being installed. The hatcheries would produce chicks of varieties like Giriraj, Banaraj, Chhapro, Kalinga Brown, Kroiler and Rose Island Red.

“The coloured bird varieties can not only lay between 150 and 180 eggs a year but also weigh more. So, they would be more acceptable and palatable in terms of meat thus providing a more rewarding employment option for the rural youth,” officials said.

Organic poultry feed comes to Columbia

Bourn also sells Purina Poultry Feed, which is what I’ve been using. I’m not sure if I’ll change or not yet.

The organic feed’s selling point for me is GMO cannot also be certified organic. The drawback for me is that the ingredient list reads like a pharmacy. The first two ingredients in all their versions of feed are 1. organic grain products and 2. organic plant protein products. The remaining ingredients are supplements and vitamins. It’s not that I have anything against supplements or vitamins. It’s just that I know that a complete balanced feed can be closely achieved through a diverse group of plants/seeds/legumes. The Purina feed ingredient list is pretty much the same. The difference comes in cost. A bag of chick starter and a bag of layer feed of Purina and Natures Grown at Bourn are $17, $13 and $24, $20, respectively.

So the two combating characteristics are GMO and price. Now $7 for a 50 lb bag of feed doesn’t seem like too awfully much, but backyard eggs (for many people) are already pretty expensive. Many people spend hundreds of dollars on their coops and runs, then the cost of feeders and waters, bedding, and feeding the chicks for the first six months, before they even begin to see a return. For too many first time backyard hen owners the cost of the first egg is more than the cost of buying commercial eggs for the entire household for two years! That said, many backyard hen owners are not raising hens for the cost. Most are doing it for more subjective reasons. Not supporting commercial egg production. The desire to know what goes into the food on the table. Wanting a closer connection to food. Wanting their children to know that food comes from living animals and plants rather than prepackaged in plastic on a shelf in the supermarket. And some, like me, also come to love the hens for themselves and their quirky personalities and crazy antics.

Commercial feed rations aren’t the be all and end all of feeding backyard birds. Many homes have the ability to also feed table scraps to their birds. I rarely have leftovers or scraps for my birds. Certainly not enough to sustain them, not even enough to supplement their diets.

New egg safety programme launched in NSW

NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA

An article in the Sydney Morning Herald last week refers to the rising number of egg-related Salmonella outbreaks in Australia between 2001 and 2008. The article raises some important points regarding food safety and such information is welcomed and supported by the state’s food safety regulator, the NSW Food Authority.

However it has failed to make mention of the comprehensive through-chain approach to egg food safety employed by the NSW Food Authority, its CEO, Alan Coutts, said on 18 May.

He said: “Eggs are a popular and nutritious food and one of the most commonly used and consumed items in many Australians’ diets. Eggs are a raw product and just like all fresh perishable food, they need careful handling to ensure they are safe. Food that is not properly handled, including eggs, can make people ill.

“In recognition of the risks associated with certain foods the NSW Food Authority has developed a number of industry sector requirements including one specific to the egg industry.

“The Authority operates with an integrated approach to improving understanding and safety of raw eggs and raw egg products right across the food chain, from farm to retail.

The chicken coop designed by RAAD is a luxury residence for chickens

The chicken coop, designed by architecture firm RAAD, is an urban luxury residence for chickens. An energy-efficient residence for chickens and hens, the chicken coop is built from sustainable materials and powered by solar energy. The fan, powered by the sun, keeps chickens cool in the hot summer months, which helps the animals maximize their yield.

The chicken coop has three different floors, providing spacious and comfortable living all-year round for chickens. The first floor is intended for living, the second for laying eggs in a comfortable and private environment and the third floor is for chickens to relax and hang out in what RAAD has named the ‘Egg Lounge.’

With a sleek white paint finish, the chicken coop is made from routed exterior grade plywood ad acrylic sheets. The chicken coop can be easily put together in one day.

Is chicken the new canary?

Chicken is an affordable (but still tasty) alternative to red meats. And without the skin, the fat content is normally lower. Non-organic chicken is a staple of the middle class, and it can be used as a gauge of consumer strength (of course, combined with other indicators).

Here’s what’s interesting…

Even though regular chicken is facing downward pressure on prices, Chipotle (CMG:NYSE) said it was experiencing a major shortage of “natural” chicken. Is this good news for Tyson? Not so fast!

Natural chicken supposedly falls right between regular chicken and fully organic chicken. It’s slightly higher in price than regular farm chicken and contains no additives or antibiotics.

What’s “unnatural” about “natural” chicken is that the FDA does not set any guidelines for what that word means in the real world. The USDA states that it’s a product containing no artificial ingredients or added color and is only minimally processed.

The bottom line is that it costs more than regular chicken. Truly organic chicken costs even more.

I bring this up because Tyson is struggling with lower demand and lower chicken prices; yet there is a shortage of natural, high-end chicken. This tells me that growth is in the upper class, not with the common folks. High-priced, organic grocers like Whole Foods Market (WFM:NASDAQ) are making record profits, which again points to a very healthy upper class.

Chicken production is a tough business to be in, but tracking demand and prices can speak volumes about the health of the consumer.

I believe we can expect the top-shelf products to stay in demand.

As for our friend the chicken, I would stay away from Tyson Foods for now and stick with high-end resellers like Whole Foods and the natural, organic food distributors like.

Cost of chicken in 2011

This report was written on May the 3rd in the year 2011 and represents an attempt to quantify the bang you get for your buck when purchasing chicken legs at this time. While not a scientific study; it is the end result of one old man’s research who has too much time on his hands. (If I had a dime for every time I’ve heard that)! My purpose is to put out information that might be useful for comparison purposes at some time in the future. (In 1900, chicken cost about .07 cent a pound. By 1999, that figure had risen to .99 cent a pound. Today, it cost me 1.49 a pound). Some of my data was gleaned from a webpage called ‘The 1900’s’.

Vaccination as part of an avian influenza control strategy 2011

In recent times these outbreaks have been occurring with increasing regularity. Outbreaks are typically of a low pathogenic form of avian influenza (LPAI). Past experience indicates that in a susceptible domestic poultry population, circulating LPAI (especially H5- and H7- subtypes) has the ability to mutate into a more devastating high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) resulting in Fowl Plague.

Vaccination as an additional control tool has been used with success in controlling LPAI5 outbreaks as well as HPAI outbreaks in the past (1995 - Utah, USA; 2000 - Italy3 & California, USA; 2001 - Hong Kong; 2002 - Colorado, USA). At the Fifty-Second Western Poultry Disease Conference held in Sacramento, California during March 2003 Capua and Marangon2 proposed a scheme, summarised in Diagram 1, whereby vaccination is included in the control strategy in certain scenarios.

The concept of vaccination in the face of HPAI is however met with much resistance based on the arguments that it is not in line with OIE or EU control strategies, would have an negative impact on export trade agreements and potentially masks the symptoms of the disease thus removing the most significant early warning signal for HPAI - acute increase in mortality.

The DIVA strategy is based on the use of an inactivated oil emulsion vaccine containing the same haemagglutinin (H) subtype as the field virus, but a different neuramidase (N). The homologous H group ensures protection while it is possible to differentiate vaccinated from infected birds based on the serological response to the N group using an indirect immunofluorescence test. Vaccinated birds should only test positive to the N group used in the vaccine, a positive reaction to the N group of the prevailing infective virus would indicate a field challenge.

Poultry sales plummet in Beijing and Shanghai after three bird flu outbreak

After three bird flu outbreaks hit flocks in different parts of China, sales of poultry in the country's main cities have taken an 80% nosedive. Health experts say that if China cannot prevent future outbreaks of bird flu among its flocks, it is only a question of time before people become infected. According to Chinese authorities, no human in China currently has bird flu.

Even though the price of chicken has dropped 50%, many people are shunning the product and going for other sources of protein.

Health officials say it is not possible to catch bird flu from well cooked chicken or eggs. For a human to catch bird flu he/she needs a lot of contact with live birds. It is possible to catch bird flu if you are involved with the slaughtering of poultry and some of the birds are infected. Bird droppings can also be a source of infection. In some rare cases, humans have caught it from other humans, but only if a person was treating an infected patient and was touching him/her a lot and with him/her for a long time.

For the moment, it is not easy for a human to catch bird flu.
Within the last few weeks there have been three important outbreaks of bird flu among flocks in China. One was in Inner Mongolia (chickens and ducks), another in Anhui and another in Hunan.

Vietnam halts bird flu vaccination to new type

(Reuters) - The Vietnamese government said it had halted the nationwide vaccination of poultry against bird flu, saying a new type of the H5N1 virus had rendered the vaccine ineffective.

"Based on post-vaccination surveillance results, a new clade of the H5N1 virus has appeared in Vietnam since 2010," the government said in a statement issued late on Thursday.

Vietnam had planned to use a vaccine imported from China for its vaccination this year, but the vaccine did not work against the new variety, the Animal Health Department said.

The new type has been circulating in northern provinces, coastal provinces in the central region as well as in the Central Highlands, it said.

The old type of the virus remains active in southern provinces, it said in a report this week.

Vietnam has detected no human cases of bird flu in 2011 but several provinces across the country have reported outbreaks in ducks and chicken.

Hongkong plans import controls on eggs

Acting Secretary for Food and Health, Gabriel Leung, has consulted lawmakers on the proposed Imported Game, Meat, Poultry and Poultry Eggs Regulation to be made under the city's Food Safety Ordinance, according to an official source.

Mr Leung said there is a need to strengthen import control of eggs because more than 99 per cent of them in Hong Kong are imported and the World Health Organization warns that eggs from infected poultry could be contaminated with the avian influenza virus.

Under the proposed regulation, 'imported poultry eggs' means imported shelled or unshelled poultry eggs commonly used for human consumption, including raw, preserved and partly-cooked eggs, and their yolks.

For every consignment of imported eggs, importers must provide an official health certificate for their export issued by a competent authority recognised by Hong Kong's Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, otherwise prior written permission from the director will be required.

The government plans to table the proposed regulation at the city's Legislative Council before the end of 2011.

chinese chickens fed mineral powder to increase weights

In yet another food scandal in China, almost 1,000 live chickens have been seized after it was discovered they were feed a mineral powder to increase their weights.

The chickens were found in China’s Southwest Chongqing municipality during a raid jointly conducted by several local authorities while they were being transported from Guizhou province early Sunday morning.

The owners of the livestock confessed to the inspectors that each of the birds had been fed between 300 to 400 grams of barite powder. Barite powder is mostly used to add weight to oil drilling mud, to deflect X-rays in medical science, as a material in the brakes of vehicles and in high-quality paints.

The chickens had been purchased from Zunyi, a city in Guizhou province. The case is under further investigation.

International egg and poultry review in South Korea

SOUTH KOREA – This is a weekly report by the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), looking at international developments concerning the poultry industry. This week’s review looks at the poultry industry in South Korea.

South Korea is experiencing rising inflation and raised its seven-day repo rate in March to counteract the rising prices. However, the Bank of Korea stated in April it still expects consumer prices to keep going up due to increased economic activity and higher oil prices. However, some of South Korea’s inflationary pressures may have been influenced by February 2011 government total foot and mouth (FMD) loss estimates of US$2.7 billion for their hog and cattle industries resulting in higher domestic pork prices. At the same time this winter, South Korea experienced an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1, resulting in the culling of more than five million birds, which also helped chicken prices to trend higher.

The Ministry of Strategy and Finance (MOSF) held a meeting on 22 April 2011 to discuss the stabilisation of consumer prices. The South Korean press release went on to state that even though livestock prices were gradually stabilising as outbreaks of FMD have abated and imports have grown, chicken and pork prices continued to be higher than the yearly average. They went on to state plans were being made to introduce a quote tariff for chicken and duty-free imports of pork will continue to enter the market.

Poultry chicken 2011

With a growing number of consumers switching from red meat to poultry, the chicken and turkey industries are booming. In addition to selling a growing quantity of poultry meat to consumers in the U.S., poultry companies are also benefitting from expanding markets around the world.

Record numbers of chickens and turkeys are being raised and killed for meat in the U.S. every year. Nearly ten billion chickens, and half a billion turkeys, are being hatched in the U.S. every year. These birds are typically crowded by the thousand into huge factory- like warehouses where they can barely move. Chickens are given less than half a square foot of space per bird while turkeys are each given less than three square feet. Both chickens and turkeys have the end of their beaks cut off, and turkeys also have their toes clipped. All of these mutilations are performed without anaesthesia, and they are done in order to reduce injuries which result when stressed birds are driven to fighting.

Chickens and turkeys are taken to the slaughterhouse in crates stacked on the back of trucks. The birds are either pulled from the crates, or the crates are lifted off the truck, often with a crane or forklift, and then the birds are dumped onto a conveyor belt. As the birds are unloaded, some fall onto the ground instead of landing on the assemblyline conveyor belt. Slaughterhouse workers intent upon 'processing' thousands of birds every hour, don't have the time nor the inclination to pick up individuals who fall through the cracks. Sometimes the birds die after being crushed by machinery or vehicles operating near the unloading area, while in other cases, they may die of starvation or exposure after days without receiving their basic needs.

Indian chicken kebabs

When I was in India many years ago, I accompanied one of my cousins to the market so she could buy a chicken for that evening’s dinner. She instructed me to wait for her in the car while she ran into the market, so I did. Two minutes later, my cousin emerged from the market holding a plastic bag. She set the bag on the floor in front of the seat next to her, and we started home.

Now, as an admission of my total ignorance, when my cousin told me that she was buying a chicken at the store, I very much imagined her buying what I knew as a market chicken: a headless, featherless, organless chicken that came in a shrink wrapped bag. Keeping that in mind (and the fact that I was still a very dedicated vegetarian), you can imagine my alarm when the bag on the floor of the car began to softly and almost indiscernibly cluck. No, I thought. Clearly I am imagining that. I watched the bag for a moment, wondering if the subtle crinkling of the bag’s sides was a product of the car’s bumping along a dirt road. Um, is that chicken… I started to ask, when, as though sensing my mild horror (can chickens smell fear?) the bag started to freak out. By the time we got home, the chicken bag was expanding from all directions. My cousin grabbed the bag, holding it out to her side like, well, like a plastic bag with a frenzied chicken contained within, and hurried along to the backyard.

I didn’t see my cousin or the chicken again until about an hour later, when both emerged from the kitchen. My cousin was holding a platter of fresh (no, really, I mean fresh) kebabs, which, moments after she set on the table, people began to rave about. The perfect seasoning, the fresh spices, the juicy meat—I was the only person at the table not enraptured by the kebabs, because I was the only person at the table not eating the kebabs. Vegetarianism aside, I could not help thinking of how quickly and matter-of-factly that chicken made its way to the table, and how impressed I was by the whole affair. Forget buying a trussed and refrigerated organic chicken from Whole Foods, my cousin had just bought a chicken.

chicken prices 2011

The Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) has opposed the imposition of Reformed General Sales Tax (RGST) on poultry sector and withdrawal of exemption/zero rating on processed chicken.

Chairman Pakistan Poultry Association Khalil Sattar, while addressing a press conference in Karachi on Tuesday, said that the government is contemplating to levy 15 per cent RGST on poultry feed while exempting chicken and eggs and withdrawing zero-rating on processed branded chicken which would result in a levy of 15 per cent GST on the sector.

He urged the govt not to change the current GST taxation status of the entire poultry sector as the sector is making tremendous contributions in providing protein to fight malnutrition and under-nutrition in a nation where one out of every five children dies before attaining the age of 5 years because of malnutrition and under-nutrition at ever-decreasing real prices.

He said, “Today the real price of chicken is 9.75 per cent cheaper than it was in the year 1998-99 whereas, during the same period, mutton and beef prices have increased by 130 per cent and 153pc respectively”. He stated that poultry product prices based on truly demand and supply mechanism, as such the increase cannot
be passed on to the consumers at will.

He indicated that a large number of farms will close down and the prices of chicken meat could, in the face of short supply, increase by 100pc from Rs175/Kg to Rs350/Kg. He emphasised that this phenomena of short supply and high prices was amply demonstrated as an aftermath of bird flu when the prices had soared more than 150pc. In such a case, chicken will be produced only for the upper class of consumers, he said.

Build a chicken coop easy

If you need to know how to build a chicken coop then you’ve come to the right place and that is for sure! I grew up on a farm and building different items was just something we did. If you want to house animals you will need a good quality barn or chicken coop, whatever the case maybe.

In this case I’ll be talking about how to build a chicken coop easy. If you are not a good carpenter already, you will need to get a high quality manual. There are plenty of them on the internet. The thing is not all of these manuals are high quality, matter of fact some are just plain ole junk, most of them. How do you know which ones are good and which ones are bad.

You will need to build your chicken coop properly or it can kill your chickens and cause a whole bunch of problems that are all completely avoidable if you know what you’re doing to begin with. Not just anybody can write a how to build a chicken coop manual because not everybody has the experience building one. Not only did I build several of them but I know the in’s and out’s because when you raise chickens in the pens you have built you learn a lot.

This is what separates me from them. I know what works the best. I know how chickens behave in any kind of conditions. What you want is the chicken coop to last you for years with little to no maintenance and that is user friendly as well.

Automatic Chicken Watering Instructions

You should always provide fresh water to your chicks at all times. I would highly recommend that you add as an energy supplement one tablespoon of sugar per quart of water. Dip your chick’s beaks in the water so that they learn what it is. Place the water in a low, heavy bowl so that your chicks can’t tip it over.

You can also try a automatic chicken watering which you can purchase in any local feed supply store. If you are operating on a budget, try using an ashtray which makes for a great temporary water-holder, but this can only work if you only have a few chicks. Consistently check the automatic chicken watering in making sure the water is clean. Your chicks must have water at all times in order to remain healthy. You will notice that your chicks will drink lots of water.

The reason this occurs is because of their production of eggs. Your chicks will consistently sip the water continually during the day. This is why it’s very important to check the water continually to ensure that your chicks have a continual supply of water. You do not have to worry about teaching your chicks to drink water from a bowl if the mother is present.

The mother hen will teach the chicks how to not only drink water from a bowl but to pick up grain. The mother hen will even teach the chicks how to perform such measures without drowning. It is highly recommended that a bowl of water be placed out daily while changing it twice daily or more if needed. If the mother hen is not present, I do not recommend using an automatic chicken watering to dispense water to your chicks.

Once considered a hub of chicken and egg business, Gurgaon in the national capital region, has lost poultry business to areas in the interior of Haryana bordering Rajasthan, according to Hindustan Times. From around 250 small and big poultry farms in Gurgaon in 1960s and 1970s, the satellite town is today left with not more than 40 farms, Ricky Thaper, Treasurer of Poultry Federation of India (PFI).

In a bid to cash in on soaring land prices in Gurgaon in 1990s with the boom in real estate business, many poultry owners of the city sold their land at a high rate and purchased bigger areas in interiors of the state like Jajjhar, Bhiwani and Narnaul, about 100km from Gurgaon bordering Rajasthan, Mr Thaper, himself in poultry trade in the town, said.
Some left the trade to enter into more profitable business like property dealing, he said.

So, in place of Gurgaon, the areas bordering Rajasthan have now become nerve centre of broiler and egg production and supply to the national capital.

Haryana and Rajasthan are the leading supplier of chicken to the national capital which runs into several lakhs while major portion of egg, a cheap source of protein, comes to Delhi from Punjab and Haryana, traders said.

Tracing history, Mr Thaper said poultry started on a small scale in Gurgaon in late 1960s and early 1970s where ex-government employees of Delhi adopted poultry as vocation after retirement. They were taught scientific poultry farming and given training at government Poultry Farm in Satbari, Delhi.

Vietnam frozen poultry, pork imports rise 20%-30%
Imports of frozen meat, particularly poultry and pork, have increased by 20% to 30% in Vietnam as prices on the country's domestic market have increased. In April, 8,219 metric tons of poultry meat and 456 metric tons of pork were imported, two to three times higher than typical numbers, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Sub-Department of Animal Health.
The price of imported meat has increased alongside domestic meat, but global prices have not, resulting in significant profits for importers. With taxes and other expenses, the global price for frozen chicken wings is VND65,000 (US$3.14) per kilogram. A kilogram of imported chicken wings, however, is being sold for VND90,000 (US$4.35). Similarity, the cost of a kilogram of imported pork is about VND60,000 (US$2.90) including tax and other expenses, while its retail price in the domestic market is VND70,000-80,000 (US$3.38-$3.87) per kilogram. Imported meat is roughly VND10,000 (US$0.48) cheaper than domestic prices.

Raising chickens for eggs

Raising chickens for eggs

Raising chicken for eggs can be done for commercial and household purposes. The price increase of household stuff and food products has caused many people to cut down on household expenses. As far as food products are concerned, there are those who have taken up livestock breeding to augment their need for food supplies. Raising chicken for eggs is an example of such. Because it can be done at home, raising chickens is easy and one can gain lots of profit out of it.

So what does it take to raise chicken for eggs? The following are the things to consider when raising chicken for eggs is what one is planning to do.

The first step is to check out the law to avoid legal complications. For example, some laws might not allow one to rear chickens for eggs in the city while some may not allow one to keep roosters, only hens. Because of this, it is important for one to check first which laws are applicable to him or her and which ones are not.

The second step is to choose the breed of chicken one is planning to raise as there are some breeds especially meant for laying eggs. It is also important for one to choose chickens which are healthy and free of diseases. The healthier the chickens are, the less they need to be taken care of.

Raising chicken for eggs is more or less simple. The most one will need are feeds and some tender loving care, and he or she can get all the eggs he or she wants. Chickens are animals which will give one lots of benefits, the reason why many are raising chicken for eggs and even meat. Perhaps one should consider following the preceding tips to be able to successfully rear chickens for eggs.

How to using the right chicken feed to ensure your flock are in good shape

How to using the right chicken feed to ensure your flock are in good shape

Chickens aren’t so picky when it comes to their food. However, what they eat reflects on the taste of eggs they produce. So, if you want to taste the freshest and most delicious eggs your hens generate, you should be feeding them the right kind of food. But before anything else, you should know how to feed chickens properly.

Chickens love to eat just about everything they see around them. You can see them kick over an empty container and peck the things they found underneath it or just run towards the trash can to look for edible chows. They also love to eat table scraps like meat and fish. Feeding them hard foods such as bones and pits are not necessary. The correct way on how to feed chickens is to scatter it on an open area and let them peck on it. Provide water and make sure to refill it regularly.

If you are taking care of laying hens, you should place them in a darkened area where no other roosters are found. Hens can produce two types of eggs. The first one is unfertilized, and the second one is fertilized. Unfertilized eggs are eggs that come out from your hen without getting laid. They are unfertilized which means, there is no chance of getting a chick out of it. If you plan to care for chicks, you should have a rooster with you. In this way, the egg can be fertilized and chick development can occur. In addition, you must also know how to feed chickens that lay eggs. Hens require different nutrition than ordinary chickens. They need to have a good source of calcium and grit to make their egg shells sturdy. You should also consider a special diet for your laying hen. If you let them eat onion, garlic and other powerful ingredients, you might witness an unusual taste in your egg.

PAKISTAN - Pakistan Poultry Association has called on the government not to implement a general sales tax (GST) on poultry feed.

The PPA Chairman Khalil Sattar, PPA (Tariff and Taxation Committee) convenor Dr Mohammad Sadiq and former chairman Dr Mohammad Aslam said that the local poultry industry was fulfilling the demands of entire country, a report in The News says.

The private sector has invested around Rs400 billion in the industry and around 1.5 million people were attached to it.

They said that if the GST comes into force, it would not only double chicken prices but also cut a source of protein for poorer people.

They said GST on poultry feed would also increase prices of processed chicken.

The Pakistan Poultry Association also staged a protest demonstration in front of the National Press Club.

Chicken hutch plans: another way to build your coop

When deciding on the size, design, and appearance of your chicken coop it can be a pretty tedious task. Every chicken coop design is different and you have to decide which is best for you! Do you want to work with a chicken shed plans or chicken ark plans or even chicken hutch plans? A easy tip that can help with deciding is you always have to decide the number of chickens you want your flock to be.

Do you want a large number of chickens with a big chicken coop so you can sell the eggs to get a small profit (eggs made by home grown chickens almost always taste better then store bought)? Then you should get around 30 chickens. If you want a smaller flock just to feed the whole family then all you will need is 7 or 10 chickens. But if your the self sustaining bachelor who just wants to save some money at the grocery store you will only need 2 or 3.

To the potential chicken owner who only wants to own a couple of chickens to just sustain his own egg eating lifestyle then the chicken hutch is probably the best choice. A chicken hutch is quick and cheap to build. They are so small that if later down the line you want to build a bigger chicken coop then you can integrate the chicken hutch into the bigger structure.

The first tip that you should always keep in mind is that a lot of people make their chicken door to small. This makes it hard for the chickens to get in and out of the coop. Its worth noting that a chicken coop door thats to big doesn’t really mean anything but a chicken coop door thats to small can be very bad for your chickens as they get older or just bulk up.

The chicken hutch is the perfect starting coop for someone who lives in a urban environment.

Egg cartons for soundproofing is perhaps one of the most popular myths about acoustics. Whether or not this belief was founded by experts or DIY enthusiasts let me break this myth by telling you that egg cartons do absolutely nothing for soundproofing. This should be obvious to you when you have a friend scream directly at your ear with only an egg tray in between the two of you.

How Diseases Occur

How Diseases Occur

Wearing sensors to see how diseases spread
I am sandwiched in the middle of a Virgin America flight. The only thing worse about sitting in the middle seat is having the guy next to me constantly sneeze and cough
The Penn State researchers developed a new tool to keep track of the number of times disease can spread through contact events. The researchers tracked 788 high school students and kept tabs on who they came into contact with.

The scientists gave the volunteers a small sensor called motes to wear around with them. These motes were given their own tracking number. That way, when the people came into contact with other people with motes, the sensor recorded who was near-by. It records it in 20-second intervals.

The researchers reasoned even when you aren’t talking, you can catch a bad bug if that person sneezes or coughs near you. It’s not like you can remember everyone who passes you. The motes can detect if the person came close enough to spread the bug to you.

“If person A has contact with person B, and person B has contact with person C, chances are that persons A and C also have contact with each other,” Salathé said in statement. “Real data illustrating these triangles provide just one more piece of information to help us track how a disease actually spreads.”

The contact events aren’t completely random. There are more like closed triangles. However, individuals didn’t really stick out. For the most part, all the volunteers in the study tended to have a good number of person-to-person interactions throughout the day.

The problem with previous studies of the spread.

Feeding Concerns for Chickens in Pasture-based Models

An important part of raising chickens is feeding - feeding makes up the major cost of production and good nutrition is reflected in the bird's performance and its products. This publication discusses feeding traditional rations as well as mixing your own rations, organic diets, and special concerns for feeding chickens in some of the pasture-based models discussed in the companion ATTRA publication. Feeding Options.

The most convenient way of feeding chickens is with a balanced pelleted ration, whether the birds are confined indoors or allowed to range outdoors. Most diets contain corn for energy, soybean meal for protein, and vitamin and mineral supplements.

Commercial rations often contain antibiotics and arsenicals to promote health and improve growth, coccidiostats for combating coccidiosis, and sometimes mold inhibitors. However, it is possible to obtain unmedicated feed-check feed labels to see if they contain feed additives.
In the industry, the feed is pelleted so the bird can eat more at one time. Chickens are nibblers and make frequent trips to the feed trough for small meals, which requires energy. Pelleting reduces the amount of energy required for a bird to feed. However, many producers of pasture-based, "natural" poultry believe that the meat is better when the bird receives more exercise. If the bird is eating a fibrous diet, grit such as oyster shells is supplied to aid in grinding up coarse feed in the gizzard.

Comfrey as a fertilizer, and the best Feed

I grow a lot of comfrey and it makes a great fertilizer. That's because comfrey is known as a dynamic accumulator, meaning the roots grow very deep (as much as 10 feet) and "mine" nutrients... that is, they bring nutrients up from the sub-soil and into their leaves. Those nutrients then can feed other plants if the comfrey leaves are used as a fertilizer.

Comfrey leaves have twice the nitrogen of composted manure, about 18 times the potash, and 59 times the amount of phosphorus.

There are several ways to make fertilizer from comfrey leaves. The leaves can be put in water to dissolve, and be used as a fertilizing tea, or mixed with other liquid fertilizers. They can be put in a bucket where they will wilt and then dissolve into a very smelly liquid which can be thinned with 15 parts of water for a foliar feed or a fertilizing tea. You can also add the leaves to a compost pile.

Personally, I like to line trenches with several layers of fresh-cut leaves, cover them with a layer of dirt, and plant potatoes in the trench. I also just lay a few of layers of leaves along the sides of my tomato plants as a feeding mulch.

Comfrey is of great value as a feedstock.

Apparently pigs love it and will happily consume up to 20lbs a day! The Nihon Agricultural
University in Japan stated that: ‘a noticeable result was the improved health of the pigs
fed on comfrey’ not only from the allantoin, which banished scouring, but better mineral
balance.

Comfrey has been successfully fed to a wide range of animals from racehorses through
sheep and cattle to exotic animals such as giraffes.

For the homeowner and gardener who may keep poultry, comfrey can provide a
useful and productive addition to the their diet. The simple digestive system of the hen contains no bacteria or stomach enzyme able to digest cellulose so the hen receives no value from high-fiber diets. In fact this is a positive disadvantage because when the crude fiber
content reaches 10% or more, there can be a reduction in the digestibility of carbohydrates. This will cause a fall in egg yields and delayed maturity even if the rest of the diet is nutritious.
