Jamaica re - examines cases of H1N1 in the country

The United States Embassy in Kingston is monitoring the current H1N1 situation since Jamaica has been suspected of under reporting the number of cases since the 2009 outbreak.

The Jamaican health ministry has reported eight confirmed H1N1 cases and two have lead to deaths. Information was leaked during the WikiLeaks pandemic and the Americans believe that Jamaican Government was “cautious” with reporting the virus to avoid the effect it could have on their tourism.

The cases that were reported indicated that most of them came from outside Jamaica, but there have been cases of the infection from Jamaica.

“The Jamaican economy continues to suffer under the global economic downturn and is heavily reliant on tourism revenues. The GOJ (Government of Jamaica) will likely remain cautious about negative press related to flu outbreaks on the island, fearing it could hurt tourism”.

Jamaica reported that they were in need of additional supplies of N95 makes and swabs for test suspected causes.

Health organizations are urging countries to take the necessary action to reduce the number of infections. From proper hand washing to covering coughs and sneezing, people can reduce the risk of infection significantly.
