Rising chicken prices eat into hawkers' profits Singapore


The Poultry Merchants' Association had earlier said in a report that the higher prices were due to a jump in the price of grain used to feed the birds. And the latest round of increases comes after prices went up by 20 to 30 cents per kg.

According to Tian Tian Chicken Rice, it is paying 50 to 60 cents more per kg of chicken.

Chicken rice chain Boon Tong Kee now pays up to S$6.50 per kg for fresh chicken from Malaysia. Still, a Boon Tong Kee spokesman said they would not be raising prices and would monitor them for now.

Satay sellers MediaCorp spoke to are also worried at how the rising price of chicken has eaten into their profits but said they would shoulder the extra cost.

Said Madam Ainon, owner of Best Satay at Lau Pa Sat: "Prices of everything are going up, from staff salaries to rent and now, chicken. But we have to tolerate lower profits."
