An investigation that was carried out by Marketplace, which airs on CBC TV, has reported that several chicken products sold in superstores across Canada happen to be contaminated with superbugs on a number of occasions. The worst part about the whole situation is that the bacteria found in these products cannot be killed with antibiotics.
For the investigation, Marketplace carried out tests on 100 samples of chicken bought from stores located in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Apart from Marketplace, Radio-Canada’s food show L’Epicerie was also involved in this one of a kind investigation.
Chicken products were bought from one of the most popular stores selling chicken. Following a proper analysis, it was reported that 66% of the products were contaminated with bacteria.
Another startling fact that arose out of the investigation was that all the bacteria found were at least resistant to one type of an antibiotic. Though, there were other bacteria as well, which were found to be resistant against eight antibiotics in some situations.
Talking about the study, the Head of Environmental Defence, Rick Smith, said that the latest findings were not pleasant at all and in fact happened to report worrisome facts. People wanting to know more about the latest action can tune into Marketplace.
