Taiwan food products contaminated with DEHP

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has warned that the food products from Taiwan are contaminated with DEHP. Scientists have revealed that the presence of DEHP in food products could lead to digestion problem and in some cases it could also lead to cancer. Consumers have been advised to avoid consuming Taiwan food products.

DEHP is a phthalates which is commonly used as plasticizers to make vinyl plastic soft and flexible. Six months ago CFIA prohibited the use of plasticizers in baby’s toys as it could easily leach out of items if they are sucked or licked for a prolonged time.

It has been told by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine that in March DEHP may have contaminated 792 cases of imported beverages from Taiwan entering Shanghai. Moreover, a spokesman of the administration said that on Thursday night mainland importers had recalled 518 cases of the beverage, which was produced by Taiwan Yes Sports Drink.

The findings by CFIA have urged the European Union to announce restrictions on the production and use of DEHP in the region, which will come into effect within three to five years. However, as a precautionary measure, Taiwan’s health authorities have demanded 168food processors to recall more than 1 million contaminated items from the market.
