Top states for broiler production

Minnesota is a national leader in poultry production, raising more than 49 million turkeys and 47 million broiler chickens, and producing almost 3 billion eggs.

The state’s turkey industry leads the nation and contributes more than $600 million annually to Minnesota’s economy. Egg and broiler production contribute another $225 million. Minnesota is also a top state for non-commercial poultry production, including upland game birds, backyard producers, and hobbyists such as 4-H and FFA.

All poultry programs at the Minnesota Board of Animal Health are managed by Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory (MPTL). The MPTL conducts poultry disease surveillance for all segments of the poultry industry, oversees Minnesota’s participation in the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), regulates poultry imports and exports of birds, and issues permits and conducts inspections for breeder flocks.
