Thailand, top poultry producer As Top Poultry Exporters

The United States has been ruling the roost in poultry meat trade with a 40 per cent market share. It exports 2,500 million metric tonne poultry products. While the US has been the top chicken exporter in the world, Thailand has been catching up with Brazil as the third player in the league.

However, the entry of low-cost chicken producers into the global arena is not being looked upon kindly, says Anuradha Desai, chairperson, national egg co-ordination committee. These countries are using bird flu as a pretext for carrying out a sustained campaign against Asian countries, she says.

What is worrying exporters like the US is the fall in price since 1997. This coincides with the aggressive entry of players from Thailand, whose poultry industry has witnessed spectacular growth in the processing market and has grabbed a share of the global markets such as the EU and Japan.
