In January, the price rose from $1.418 to $1.482 per kilogram.
Ontario prices chicken by formula and the two main factors are the cost of feed and chicks. Chick costs are also set by a marketing board and it, too, has been increasing its prices to reflect higher feed costs.
All other provinces across Canada will follow Ontario’s price increases.
Despite the increases, chicken is unlikely to lose market share to pork and beef because those prices have also been rising because farmers lost fortunes over the last five to 10 years and that has resulted in reduced production.
