The egg producers claimed that they were only recovering the production cost of eggs by selling them at the current price.
On Wednesday, eggs were being sold for Tk 28 to Tk 30 per hali in Hatirpul Bazaar, the price having increased by Tk 6 per hali compared to the previous week’s price.
In the last few days of the week, 100 eggs were being sold for Tk 650 to Tk 700, the price having increased by Tk 100 to Tk 150 compared to last week, in the wholesale markets of Dhaka.
Market insiders said that the price of eggs usually rises in the monsoon season every year.
They said that there was a dearth of fish in the last few days as the fishermen had to refrain from casting nets in the deep sea and rivers because of the depression in the Bay of Bengal. The protein-hungry consumers, deprived of fish, switched their demand to eggs, causing a price-hike.
Manju Sheikh, an egg wholesaler at Tejgaon, said on Wednesday that the price of eggs soared due to the rainy weather which had disrupted communications in the last few days. The price started to decline from yesterday and will continue to do so if the weather is good.
Although the traders in Tejgaon wholesale egg market on Tuesday said the price of 100 eggs stood at Tk 550, it seems that the price decline in the wholesale market was not reflected in the retail markets of the capital.
Munna, a retailer at Karwan Bazaar Kitchen Market, said that he bought 100 eggs for Tk 630 from wholesalers and retailed them for Tk 28 per hali.
Although the price of egg has increased, the egg producers claimed that they do not get back even the cost of production.
The Bangladesh Egg Producers Association’s organising secretary and owner of Maa Enterprise, Md Shahidul Islam, told New Age that he had sold eggs for Tk 530 per hundred, which was lower than the cost of production that is around Tk 550 for a hundred eggs.
