Top news Indonesia| Ceva discusses the epidemiology, vaccine and vaccination of ND
Epidemiology of Newcastle Disease (ND) was one of the main issues discussed by Dr. Giovanni Cattoli of Istituto Zooprolifattico Sperimentale delle Venezie recently in Bogor, Indonesia. This technical seminar was conducted by PT. Ceva Animal Health Indonesia.
Cattoli explained that ND shares several epidemiological features. That’s why increasing targeted surveillance and biosecurity will determine better prevention and control on both infections.
To do that, Cattoli recommends constant monitoring of the efficacy of laboratory test procedures to guarantee the most adequate diagnostic approach. He also said that data sharing of surveillance data including epidemiological and virological data will allow better vaccine preparedness and the development of tailored control strategies.
Because ND has different epidemiological conditions, Christophe Cazaban – Poultry Biologicals Scientific Direction Officer of Ceva Santé Animale, France said that ND vaccination including vaccine, vaccine administration and vaccination programs are important.
Talking about vaccines, Cazaban said that many ND vaccine strains are available. But its tolerance and strength should be considered in order to choose good quality ND vaccines. He continued, interference between passive immunity (MDA – Maternal Derived Antibody) and classical vaccines is one of the major problems associated with ND vaccination. The fact is that MDA reduce and shorten protection induced by classical live ND vaccines. Besides that, MDA reduce and delay protection induced by classical inactivated ND vaccines.
To overcome the interference problem, Cazaban believes that vector vaccine HVT-NDV could be the promising answer. He said that vector vaccine HVT-NDV induces a stronger immunity, even in the presence of MDA. It also doesn’t spread and creates no lesion of the trachea. “Although it has many advantages, but injection must be perfectly made,” he concluded.

Vietnam halts nationwide poultry vaccination for world
The nationwide vaccination of poultry against bird flu in Vietnam has been halted as a new type of the H5N1 virus had rendered the vaccine ineffective the Vietnamese government has said.
The government said in a statement that a new type of the virus had appeared in 2010 following post-vaccination surveillance. Vietnam had planned to use a vaccine imported from China for its vaccination this year, but the vaccine did not work against the new variety, the Animal Health Department said.
The new type has been circulating in northern provinces, coastal provinces in the central region as well as in the Central Highlands, although it was reported that the old type of the virus remains active in southern provinces.
H5N1 virus in poultry was first detected in Vietnam in 2003 and health experts now fear that the disease could mutate to a form that could be easily transmitted between humans. Almost all of the human H5N1 infections to date are believed to have passed from birds to humans.
Vietnam has detected no human cases of bird flu in 2011 but several provinces across the country have reported outbreaks in ducks and chickens.

Vaccination as part of an avian influenza control strategy 2011
In recent times these outbreaks have been occurring with increasing regularity. Outbreaks are typically of a low pathogenic form of avian influenza (LPAI). Past experience indicates that in a susceptible domestic poultry population, circulating LPAI (especially H5- and H7- subtypes) has the ability to mutate into a more devastating high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) resulting in Fowl Plague.
Vaccination as an additional control tool has been used with success in controlling LPAI5 outbreaks as well as HPAI outbreaks in the past (1995 - Utah, USA; 2000 - Italy3 & California, USA; 2001 - Hong Kong; 2002 - Colorado, USA). At the Fifty-Second Western Poultry Disease Conference held in Sacramento, California during March 2003 Capua and Marangon2 proposed a scheme, summarised in Diagram 1, whereby vaccination is included in the control strategy in certain scenarios.
The concept of vaccination in the face of HPAI is however met with much resistance based on the arguments that it is not in line with OIE or EU control strategies, would have an negative impact on export trade agreements and potentially masks the symptoms of the disease thus removing the most significant early warning signal for HPAI - acute increase in mortality.
The DIVA strategy is based on the use of an inactivated oil emulsion vaccine containing the same haemagglutinin (H) subtype as the field virus, but a different neuramidase (N). The homologous H group ensures protection while it is possible to differentiate vaccinated from infected birds based on the serological response to the N group using an indirect immunofluorescence test. Vaccinated birds should only test positive to the N group used in the vaccine, a positive reaction to the N group of the prevailing infective virus would indicate a field challenge.
Poultry sales plummet in Beijing and Shanghai after three bird flu outbreak
After three bird flu outbreaks hit flocks in different parts of China, sales of poultry in the country's main cities have taken an 80% nosedive. Health experts say that if China cannot prevent future outbreaks of bird flu among its flocks, it is only a question of time before people become infected. According to Chinese authorities, no human in China currently has bird flu.
Even though the price of chicken has dropped 50%, many people are shunning the product and going for other sources of protein.
Health officials say it is not possible to catch bird flu from well cooked chicken or eggs. For a human to catch bird flu he/she needs a lot of contact with live birds. It is possible to catch bird flu if you are involved with the slaughtering of poultry and some of the birds are infected. Bird droppings can also be a source of infection. In some rare cases, humans have caught it from other humans, but only if a person was treating an infected patient and was touching him/her a lot and with him/her for a long time.
For the moment, it is not easy for a human to catch bird flu.
Within the last few weeks there have been three important outbreaks of bird flu among flocks in China. One was in Inner Mongolia (chickens and ducks), another in Anhui and another in Hunan.

Merial launches poultry vaccine in china
"Merial’s VAXXITEK HVT + IBD, a high-technology vector vaccine which protects chickens against infectious bursal disease (IBD) and Marek’s disease has been launched in China.

Taiwan, one of few East Asian countries to have avoided H5N1, is enjoying bumper exports of frozen ducks. Some importers chose frozen ducks from Taiwan and found they were superior for their needs and cheaper than ducks from elsewhere. On September 9, 2008, Central News Agency (Taiwan), using figures from Council of Agriculture (COA), said Taiwan maintained its traditional frozen duck export markets and opened new ones in 2007.
Taiwan raised 11 million ducks in 2007 with a production value of around US$193 million and fgained export revenues of US$26 million. Central News Agency interviewed Lin Chih-yuan, deputy manager of the Ger Chuan Foods Inc., a leading duck meat exporter, who said, “Even Japan, which has high hygiene standards for imported meat, welcomes Taiwan duck meat. In 2007, Taiwan sold 5,000 tons of duck meat to Japan to make Beijing duck,” Lin Chih-yuan said. Taiwan also succeeded in penetrating the South Korean market during 2007 and exported 700 tonnes of frozen whole ducks or duck meat for the year.

New Vaccine Developed Newcastle Disease against
US - A new vaccine against Newcastle disease (ND) in poultry has been developed by US Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists in Athens, Georgia.

Using reverse genetics technology, the new vaccine is made from part of a virus that is similar to the wild-type Newcastle disease virus (NDV) circulating in the environment today.
Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in the agency's Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory in Athens developed the vaccine, which not only reduces mortality and severity of NDV symptoms in poultry, but also decreases the amount of virus spread as well. ARS is USDA's principal intramural scientific research agency, and the research supports the USDA priority of promoting international food security.
Led by microbiologist Qingzhong Yu, the researchers found that reverse genetics technology enabled them to generate a new vaccine by exchanging a gene from the original vaccine with a similar gene of the current circulating virus. When the new vaccine, containing gene sequences similar to the wild-type virus, was used in vaccination studies, the vaccinated birds were protected from disease and shed less of the wild-type virus after infection.
Current vaccines for Newcastle disease are used widely in commercial poultry and protect the vaccinated birds from disease, but do not stop the virus from being spread from infected to healthy birds. A vaccine that reduces both the shedding of the virus and spreading of viruses among birds is sorely needed by the industry, according to Dr Yu.
Most vaccines used in the United States are formulated with NDV isolated in the 1940s. However, since then new NDV strains have emerged that are genetically different, said Dr Yu.
NDV causes disease in more than 250 species of birds and typically causes respiratory, gastrointestinal and/or nervous system symptoms. The most severe form of Newcastle disease can result in disease and mortality rates exceeding 90 percent in susceptible chickens. The most recent US outbreak, which occurred in 2002-2003 in California, Nevada and Texas, illustrates the devastation and financial cost that can result: more than 3.4 million birds were destroyed, and the cost of controlling the outbreak in California alone was more than $160 million.
